Greetings to all of you!
I apologize for not updating everyone sooner. Internet just wasn't available for the Team while in Haiti. Communication of any kind can be challenging and or expensive. Everyday we were able to send a brief email home to let family members know what was going on. Many thanks to a dear Brother and Friend for making these brief communications possible, it was refreshing for parties in both countries to know all was well.
Jan 3 was a travel day. It was an interesting journey as we entered Haiti without our translator. It was refreshing to join up with Yvon Etienne and Jerrel, our translater, as we exited the airport. The 2 1/2-3 hour journey north to L'Estere was an eye opening experience for those new to Haiti. Driving is an adventure! The country is beautiful, mountainous, lush at places along the ocean, dry most places, crowded in towns, desolate in the countryside and green and wet in the rice paddies.
The people are beautiful and we were amazed at how they get the most out of every mode of transportation they use. Motorcycles carry 5 people at times and usually some goods like rice or jugs of oil. We even witnessed 1 motorcycle carry a single bed, 1 piece all together, out of town. Trucks, small ones Chevy S-10 size, are not loaded until 20 people are loaded into the bed. Roof racks carry all sorts of goods from huge bags of rice to suitcases and firewood. The Haitians do not waste any resource!
Our accommodations in L'Estere were wonderful. We stayed in the Etienne family housing compound and our hosts were very gracious and accommodating. Families in Haiti usually live close together, this compound had several houses within the security walls around it.
Our Team of 13, down to 11 temporarily, had a good first day. We were all tired but excited for what God prepared before us. The commotion and noise of L'Estere was a bit overwhelming at first. It was interesting to watch over the town square from our 2nd floor balcony. We gleaned a fair bit of attention as well. Some how they knew we were not from the area. ;-)
